While in Austin for Formula 1 I had to carve out a little time for this very special—to me anyway—senior session. Special because this young woman’s parents have been some of my closest friends for thirty years. And in my previous life as a graphic designer I designed her birth announcement which really makes this somewhat of a full circle moment. I have no idea what the future holds for Ava, but I know it’s going to be amazing.

It’s rare I’m all that happy with my landscape photos in general, and my aurora borealis photos in particular. With last nights “sure thing” opportunity to see them I opted to change it up and try to find something a little different than open view with mountains—not because I thing there’s anything wrong with that, simply to try to get out of my own personal aurora photo funk—and headed up to Whitefish Mountain Resort. I still didn’t find precisely what I was hoping for but I’m more happy with these than I have been with any other northern lights photos I’ve taken, and I consider that some progress. Felt it deserved a spot in the main feed versus simply in my stories.
